Managing Our Patients in the Information Age The field of dentistry continues to change at an exponential rate. From the introduction of new technologies to new and innovative understandings of normal and abnormal biology and diseases, to new diagnostic tests and protocols, dental providers and our patients are inundated with information at a prolific rate. For example, we might hear reports of a study showing that it is healthy to ingest eggs or drink a glass of red wine and then, a short time later, we may hear about yet another study stating that it is unhealthy to ingest or…

VIEWPOINT continued from page 10 relied on the Dewey Decimal System, the periodicals, or the librarian to ascertain credible information, often taking hours. In today's fast-paced age of instant gratification and want-it-yesterday mentality, most people now rely almost solely on the Internet as their primary source of information.1 As doctors, we should take more time than our patients to become involved in scholarship and theories (related to dentistry) and to evaluate the information we are retrieving, whether the resource is the library, journals, textbooks, the Internet, or perhaps from our colleagues. In my opinion, we need to devote time and…

FOCUS ON: Endodontics L. Stephen Buchanan, DDS, discusses endoscopy and its future in endodontics. Q: What technological addition do you see with the greatest potential to positively impact endodontic procedures? A: The biggest coming change will be the entry of endoscopy into endodontic practice and, from there in short order, through the rest of dentistry. Endoscopic camera lenses will take endodontics by storm because we are usually first to the imaging party (since we can't see diddly during most of our procedures), but after we get it started, I predict endoscopes will be in use by more general practitioners and…

INTERVIEW: ROGER P. LEVIN, DDS, Levin Group 1 Would you explain to Dentistry Today readers how Levin Group became a leading dental consulting firm? 2014 Best of Class Pride Institute's BEST OF CLASS Takes Center Stage Paul Feuerstein, DMD Technology Editor In our profession, we all look at products and want to be sure we are using "the best" one. We see the advertisements, listen to the experts, and read the journals in an attempt to make sense of it all. I have written and talked about this many times throughout the years. And now, once again, this year at the ADA Annual Session, there will be an area on the floor of the exhibit hall reserved for the Pride Institute Best of Class…

Pride Institute 2014 Best of Class Aquasil Ultra Cordless System DENTSPLY Caulk | (800) 532-2855 | dentsply.com Retraction for crown and bridge has been part of the process that no one particularly likes to do, but it is of course critical in order to transmit the proper information to the laboratory or digital design center. It is tedious of using one cord and takes more time if using 2. The use of pastes and gels is also somewhat time consuming (as the patient has to bite on cotton or Styrofoam for a few minutes), and cotton shows the retraction results…

Pride Institute 2014 Best of Class Excellerator & Excellerator RT Propel Orthodontics | (855) 377-6735 | propelorthodontics.com What if you could reduce the time of orthodontic treatment with any type of tooth movement modality? It is well known that moving teeth too rapidly can cause a myriad of issues unless you change the biology of the alveolar bone. Whether you are using brackets, metal, clear or white wires, or clear aligner trays, you are still holds the cards on the length of treatment. There are systems to improve efficiency, including indirect bonding, computer-aided setups, mini implants, and self-ligation, to name…

Pride Institute 2014 Best of Class AirFloss Philips Oral Healthcare | (800) 422-9448 | philipsoralhealth care.com Almost every dental professional asks every patient at his or her primary and recall visit the following question: "How often are you flossing?" The answers of course range from the honest "never" to "always," but many are stated with a bit if a grimace. This tedious task has gone high-tech with Philips Oral Healthcare's AirFloss. Unlike a pulsating water system, this small, self-contained unit sends a microburst of air and water or mouthrinse between teeth for a full-mouth interproximal cleaning in 30 seconds. Studies…

Pride Institute 2014 Best of Class CariVu DEXIS | (888) 883-3947 | dexis.com Even with the best digital radiography systems, there are often areas of decay that we still question. The use of a bright, near-infrared light can transilluminate the tooth and often show decayed areas just below the enamel surface on the occlusal or even subsurfaces under a marginal ridge interproximally. This lighting also is quite vivid in showing fractures. DEXIS, with its CariVu System, has the bright, near-infrared light with a small camera, allowing the clinician to capture these images much in the way you would take a…
