Cover Me Did I make the cover? I can't wait to post a photo of it on Facebook!" When I took over this position, I was inundated with emails and calls asking, "Hey Paul, can you get me on the cover?" I had no idea how this all worked and have spent this year trying to figure it out. This honor was set up many years ago when CE was only five and dental practitioners had to attend meetings to get credits. There were several influential dentists who would present at the larger and more well-known meetings. In order to…

Can New-Patient Calls Be Your Best Marketing? Now more than ever, dental practices have a golden opportunity to shine over the phone. According to a 2020 survey by Arizona State University, "customer service is worse than ever, and more people are enraged about it." Inevitably, unhelpful, impolite interactions are becoming the norm, making it much easier for thoughtful, caring businesses to truly stand out. There's no better place to start for dental practices than with every new-patient call. An increasing number of people may be embracing apps, email, and texting to make appointments or answer their questions, and you can…
- Page 14
VIEWPOINT continued from page 10 you can give your team lots of leeway to make calls personal. I suggest encouraging them to be themselves and inject their own personalities into patient interactions. It's a sharp contrast to the stiff, rigidly controlled pseudo-conversations that characterize bad call experiences. Let's touch on some basic tips. • Answer the phone by the third ring. It demonstrates attentiveness and enthusiasm on the part of your practice. Let it ring far too long, and you risk a prospective patient hanging up or thinking your practice is overly busy or disorganized (which, frankly, is true if…

Oral Cancer Jaisri R. Thoppay, DDS, MBA, MS, discusses the assessment and management of oral lesions. Q: Why is oral cancer so difficult to diagnose? A: The impact of systemic conditions and diseases in the oral cavity is well documented and often quoted as a window to the body. The oral cavity, though easily accessible, is complex and sometimes presents enigmatic conditions. With newer medical management and advancement in clinical approaches, new oral conditions have started to present. Post-COVID-19 complications in the oral cavity are among the sites of late-onset neuropathic, and oral lesions are a few to mention. The…

Women in Dentistry Stephenie Goddard, CEO of Glidewell Dental, speaks with Dentistry Today's editor-in-chief, Dr. Paul Feuerstein, about the organization's Guiding Leaders program. Q: First of all, tell us about your new position. A: Earlier this year, I was named the new CEO of Glidewell Dental. Jim Glidewell has led and, in fact, works with me almost daily. I hope to be able to continue his quest for excellence and innovation in the years to come. He has been a leader in dentistry for 52 years, and the company has evolved from a dental laboratory to a creative, educational, and…

A: Yes. Last year, we had about 100 applicants and could only pick 25. To qualify, you have to have 5 years of experience and must be currently practicing. One of the essential requirements is a true commitment to the program as well as attendance. We don't want paper members. These women work as a cohesive group and have continuous "projects" that won't really work if they are not all in. They also have to be emotionally present and willing to participate, not just present. Also, second-year members have a "capstone" project where each has to either do a large…

Changing Lives With 3D Facial Aesthetics Dean Vafiadis, DDS, discusses the details of full-mouth reconstruction. Q: What do you specialize in? A: We specialize in full-mouth reconstruction (FMR) and as you may know, FMR is when we take patients who have lost teeth and been disabled dentally. They've lost vertical dimension. Their dentition has been either neglected or the dentistry has not been there for many years. The patient needs to get rehabilitated. FMR basically puts teeth back together in the right position one by one and 3-dimensionally facially. This enables the teeth to be put together in an ideal…

Temporary Gingival Retraction and Moisture Management INTRODUCTION Although scientific and technological advancements have enhanced the predictability of many dental procedures, cedures, the clinical techniques and products used for gingival retraction and hemostasis remain critical to the success of crown, bridge, and other restorative treatments. In particular, the retraction, hemostatic, and moisture control protocol undertaken when creating a clearly visible and unencumbered path to gingival margins and finish lines significantly affect efficiency, accuracy, and comfort during preparation and impression taking procedures—whether they be conventional or digital. Fortunately, retraction paste can be used to effectively displace the soft tissue and produce a…
