Giving Thanks We will be celebrating Thanksgiving in the United States again this month. It's a time to be thankful for family, friends, and others who share our lives and for the blessings of life. It is also a good time to show thankfulness by doing acts of kindness for those who may be less fortunate in life. We can be thankful for our noble profession and the hard work done, which provides caring services for so many patients. Expressions of appreciation and gratitude make great gifts to give generously to our office teams, laboratory teams, and your patients. And,…

Vaping: What Every Teenager Should Know The astonishing rise of vaping and e-cigarette use among our youth, particularly in middle and high school students, presents a new dilemma for dentists. About 3.6 million students used e-cigarettes in 2018, an increase of 1.5 million students from the previous year. This represents a 78% jump in usage among middle school students and 78% among high school students in one year. When talking about vaping, it's important to note that these products are referred to by many names, including e-cigarettes, vape pens, e-hookahs, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), as well as by…

Diabetes Detection Susan Maples, DDS, discusses the importance of screening for diabetes in a dental practice. In light of the well-documented impact diabetes mellitus (DM) has on oral disease, and vice versa, our ability to detect DM has become our opportunity as dentists, and perhaps soon, our responsibility! Data from the 2009-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey revealed that a staggering 60% of those with DM had moderate to severe periodontal disease (PD). There is, in fact, a bidirectional relationship between active PD and uncontrolled DM, meaning each makes the other worse. Thus, a dual epidemic is upon us:…

The 3S PowerCure System: Rethinking Direct Resin Restorations From the Ground Up Peter A. Gardell, DDS Direct resin restorations have become the treatment cornerstone for the general dentist's office. The financial health of a practice can revolve around each practitioner's ability to place them efficiently. The reputation of the office can also be negatively affected if the dentist cannot deliver a beautiful, long-lasting, and high free filling. These are all potential pitfalls when one worries more about speed and cost rather than quality. Dental material companies realize this, and they seek to evolve their products to enhance the process. During…

Key Developments in Adhesive Dentistry The development of new adhesive materials has begun to revolutionize many aspects of restorative and preventive dentistry. Swiss chemist Oscar Hagger patented a "Cavity Seal" material to be used in combination with the chemically curing resin Sevriton in 1951. This product contained an adhesive called glycerophosphoric acid dimethacrylate, which was polymerized using a sulfmic acid initiator, later known as "Sevriton Cavity Seal." This adhesive material relied on acidic monomers capable of etching and interacting with tooth surfaces on a molecular level in order to form physical/chemical bonds between restorations and teeth. Hagger's concept was soon…

Minimally Invasive Mini Dental Implants Todd E. Shatkin, DDS Arman Ghafarian Jared F. Shatkin, MS Kyle Hayes, MS Thomas Spulecki Jr, DDS INTRODUCTION Implant dentistry has been a field that has been evolving ever since the early investigator Branemark introduced the process of bone osseointegration. Conventional implants use the concept of bone osseointegration to unite the placed implant and bone. This process often requires a healing process of several months after placement of the implant. Mini dental implants are a continuation of the practice of minimally invasive dentistry where the osseointegration time is essentially minimized. With the technology of mini…
