Shatkin F.I.R.S.T. Changing the Lives of Patients Locally, Nationally, and Globally Todd E. Shatkin, DDS Locally I have placed more than 15,000 mini dental implants and have changed the lives of my patients in Western New York one smile at a time. My patented F.I.R.S.T. procedure with mini dental implants has made replacing missing teeth and stabilizing dentures simple and less invasive. In fact, I developed the "Fix on Six" procedure that eliminates the need for dentures. The mini dental implant procedure is less invasive, produces less discomfort, results in less healing time, requires fewer visits to the dentist, and…

Emerging Dental Specialties and Recognition In 1932, there were only 4 medical specialties: ophthalmology, otolaryngology, obstetrics and gynecology, and dermatology and syphilology. The American Medical Association (AMA) had controlled the specialty recognition process and kept new emerging medical specialties, such as cardiology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and surgery, from gaining specialty recognition. Therefore, these emerging medical specialties formed the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and took over the process of medical specialty recognition. As the AMA was (and is) a trade organization, the ABMS formed as a credentialing agency. A credentialing agency sets the standards, which include clinical and didactic…

VIEWPOINT continued from page 10 Specialization Within Dentistry In 1957, there were 7 dental specialties recognized by the ADA: endodontics, oral surgery (oral and maxillofacial surgery), orthodontics (dentofacial orthopedics), pedodontics (pediatric dentistry), periodontics, oral pathology (oral and maxillofacial pathology), and dental public health. Endodontics became a recognized dental specialty in 1963, and oral and maxillofacial radiology became one in 1999. A number of dental specialty applications were submitted to the ADA from such emerging dental specialties as oral medicine, dental anesthesia, orofacial pain, and implant dentistry, and these applications were all rejected, even when the dental specialty application had categorically…

FOCUS ON: New Horizons in Aesthetics Dr. Louis Malcmacher opines on the latest skills needed to fully serve patients and expand professional goals. Q: What has been the biggest change in aesthetic dentistry in the last 10 years? A: By far, the biggest change is the realization by dental professionals that aesthetic dentistry involves more than just the teeth. For years, aesthetic dentistry educators would teach dental professionals to tell their patients, "If I put white veneers on the 4 to 6 front teeth, you will have some great looking teeth, but you will not have a great looking smile."…

Spotlight Toothpaste Protects Enamel and Fills in Small Holes CINCINNATI—Curaprox USA's Black Is White toothpaste contains activated charcoal as opposed to the chemical bleaching agents other whitening pastes contain. So it is black—truly black—and all, it does grind the enamel away. Instead, the activated charcoal absorbs precisely those particles that cause discoloration, especially tea, coffee, nicotine, and red wine. Black Is White is enamel friendly as well. This is because the hydroxylapatite actually touches the tooth enamel as a thin film. As a result, it protects the enamel and even fills in small holes. This whitening toothpaste is exactly the…

Conservative Approach to a Multidisciplinary Challenge James Elias, DDS Many patients and doctors can find it challenging when multiple disciplines of dentistry are needed in the course of treating a patient. We know that a comprehensive general dentist and/or a comprehensive team can best handle more complex treatment plans. Patients simply want to have a positive outcome, and most people believe that we were put on this earth to help one another. If we can assure them of that, and if we work together to have a treatment plan and timeline for care that is within our patients' financial abilities,…

Now, having been an actual part of the process of fully evaluating the aesthetics and function of the additive restorative treatment proposed, she said, "Let's do this!" Clinical Protocol The first step was to remove the occlusal bis-acryl temporaries from teeth Nos. 3 to 5 and Nos. 12 to 15. Due to…

Using the Right Matrix Band for Better and Faster Large Class II Restorations Robert Haraden, DDS There are 3 key challenges relating to matrix bands for dentists performing Class II restorations. The first is choosing and placing the right style: either a sectional matrix band or a Tofflemire-style matrix band. The second is properly wedging the band to separate the teeth to accommodate the width of the band to facilitate a good contact and create more interpoximal box to prevent composite overhangs. The third is properly tightening the band to eliminate contamination, which includes blood and other gingival sulcular fluids.…
- Page 63
tamination test technique is used to verify that the band is free of contamination. Because the silicone seal created by the PinkBand surface maintains a contamination-free area, blood or other salivary fluid will rarely, if ever, return (Figure 3). Furthermore, when the composite is being packed and placed, contamination is prevented if the PinkBand is properly wedged and tightened. PinkBand restorations can be made even more convenient with the use of a Contact Pro 2 contact forming instrument, which can be used to create ideally shaped and positioned interproximal contacts (Figure 4). PinkBand's superior seal is especially advantageous when performing…

Enhances Facially Driven Digital Implant Design Natalie Wong, DDS INTRODUCTION Implant placement is no longer a novel treatment for dentists or patients. Although many treatment plans involving implant placement and restorations can be done using conventional radiographs and traditional surgical techniques, there are distinct advantages in incorporating cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) techniques in the treatment planning phase. The use of a 3-D CBCT scan in implantology is essential to avoid vital anatomy or to navigate challenging anatomical structures, such as nerves, blood vessels, concavities in the mandible and maxilla, and maxillary sinuses. The use of 2-D periapical films and…

Enhances Facially Driven... continued from page 72 is desirable to establish a new incisal edge position, the newly sized teeth can be overlaid on the masked teeth and compared (Figure 2). Similarly, newly created digital teeth can be added into the correct positions at the desired angulations for function and aesthetics (Figure 3). Essentially, this is the beginning of the digital wax-up design phase. Manipulating the Data to Create a Facially Driven Treatment Plan The CBCT scan is invaluable when creating a treatment plan and is used most often to guide a bone-driven plan. However, the CBCT scan can also…

Planning Implant Placement Once the facially driven design has been created, the implant placement can be planned. The software has a library of different implants and components from all of the manufacturers, which allows the dentist to choose the desired implant size, length, and abutments for each designated implant tooth.* At this stage, the clinician evaluates the patient's anatomy and hard tissue structures, including the restorative space, bone width, bone height, and bone density, to aid in the selection and position of the implants. It is essential that the implant is placed in the best volume and quality of bone…
