EDITOR'S PAGE R-E-S-P-E-C-T A year ago, after I presented one of my workshops, Dr. Anne Kent from New Brighton, Minn., came up to me and said "I loved this course, and it was a level playing field. I didn't quite understand what she meant by that. She explained, "I am a woman dentist, and I was treated here as a dentist." On questioning Anne, as well as several dentists who are women, I was a bit shocked to find that when one walks into a room of dentists or goes up to a trade show booth, they often get asked…

Outperformers: Practices Outperforming the Pack, and How I clearly remember the date, March 17, 2020, when the city of Chicago placed a mandatory shelter-in-place order. I locked up the practice and said to my team, "I will see you in 2 weeks." In the meantime, panic struck and I needed to devise a plan for my pediatric and orthodontic offices. I know now that it was not the only fearing for my business and patients. At the onset "fear" wasn't even the tip of the iceberg of how I felt during the mandate. I'm sure many of you can relate.…

VIEWPOINT continued from page 10 supports the idea that women who support one another are more successful as Shelby Zalis, CEO of The Female Quotient, discussed in her column for Forbes. Many dentists have similar personality traits. I think we would largely agree that dentists can be risk averse, perfectionists, ambitious, studious, and perhaps "to themselves." What MDIB provides is a space where moms can feel supported, heard, and share ideas. The start of the pandemic to the present day demonstrates the true purpose of MDIB, which is that when one rises, we all rise together. Now how we all…

The numbers don't lie—women are here, and we're making our mark in dentistry. However, the future of dentistry isn't limited by gender. Instead, we'll be able to propel it forward by…

Precious Metal Refining Has Evolved Significantly in Dentistry The use of precious metals in dentistry dates back thousands of years, with evidence of gold dental work found in the teeth of ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. Over time, the refining of these metals has evolved to improve their purity and suitability for use in dental applications. Early methods of refining precious metals for use in dentistry involved simply melting the metal and casting it into a desired shape. However, this process often resulted in impurities that could compromise the quality of the metal and potentially cause harm to the patient.…

Women in DENTISTRY Are Women Finally Equal? I once had a conversation with a woman who said she wished we (women) never entered the workforce. She had wished that we never fought for equal rights. I don't necessarily consider myself a feminist, but I'd slightly gasped at her comment at that look weeks, if not months, to unpack it. And since then, there have been many moments when I'd agreed with her. With us entering the workforce; working full time; and rising to become industry leaders, CEOs of corporations, deans of universities, prime ministers, vice presidents, we'd begun to imagine…

"This is not a matter of me stepping down," Mr. Glidewell stressed at the time. "But with all that we're doing in an effort to improve the lives of dentists and their patients, I could use another hand at…

Women in DENTISTRY Groundbreaking Collaboration In my nearly 17 years in the dental field, I have witnessed remarkable transformations and discovered my own true passion. Starting as a dental assistant in Olympia, Wash., I quickly became enamored with the intricacies of dentistry. Little did I know then that this profession would evolve from a mere job to a deep-rooted love that extended far beyond the confines of a clinical setting. Following dental school, my path mirrored that of many dental graduates: I became an associate and eventually opened my own private practice. Starting from scratch, I relied on my belief…

Women in DENTISTRY Women Helping Women The idea of an "all-woman dentist" issue of Dentistry Today is intriguing and probably well overdue. With the increase in women attending dental school programs the need for mentors and support mechanisms becomes most prominent. The female perspective is unique. Building the practice from scratch is not easy for anyone and was not a simple endeavor for a single female like myself. My staff consists of mostly women with one young man who aspires to become a colleague. Several hygienists keep me hopping, and my outstanding front office and clinical team help create success.…

Processing an Implant Crown in the Aesthetic Zone This is a very interesting issue of Dentistry Today which all of us should take some time reflecting on. As a fella, I really had no idea of the tribulations that women dentists experience. When I heard from one of our implant contributors, Dr. Marwa Emam, who practices in Cairo, Egypt, that some male patients refuse to receive dental treatment by a female dentist, I am surprised and disgusted. As a major percentage of dental school students are now female, this contemptuous sentiment really will not hold water soon. I have the…

Modified Emergence Profile of a Maxillary Central Incisor Implant INTRODUCTION Replacement of incisors is a huge challenge for clinicians, technicians, and even patients, and although the advancements in dental implants and techniques made outcomes more predictable, proper management of the soft tissues and patients' acceptance of results are still not guaranteed. Moreover, patients facing the loss of their teeth may experience apprehension toward losing their social image or daily function.
