W hen I met Dr. Todd Snyder many years ago, he had received his Fellowship from the AACD and was teaching courses in aesthetic dentistry. I had a chance to sit down with him and hoped to get some pointers on tooth preparation, materials, adhesive techniques, and more. Instead, he asked me about what car I was driving. Of course, living in snowy New England, I proudly said that I had the LL Bean Edition Subaru Outback. He smirked and told me about his experiences with high-performance vehicles and his passion for auto racing. In this issue, Dr. Snyder combines…

Chasing a Dream in Charlotte Owning a dental practice in my hometown of Charlotte, NC, was always my goal. Growing up in the area, I had imagined returning after dental school to serve the community that shaped me. But when I graduated, I quickly realized that opportunities were scarce. Practices for sale were nearly nonexistent. Undeterred, I took a proactive approach: I sent over 500 mailers to local practice owners, hoping to spark a conversation or uncover a hidden opportunity. Months passed with little to show for it. Many mailers went unanswered, and I began to doubt whether a practice…

VIEWPOINT opportunities. By observing diverse practice styles and patient populations, I developed strategies for efficiency, patient communication, and clinical decision-making that I would later apply in my own practice. The Unexpected First Practice Eventually, a practice opportunity did present itself in Charlotte—but it was nothing like what I had imagined. The office had been abandoned after the previous owner fell seriously ill and passed away within a year. Walking into the space was daunting. Equipment was outdated, patient charts were in disarray, and the patient base had largely moved on. There was an emotional weight as well, knowing that the…

FIRST IMPRESSIONS disrupt and eliminate biofilm. It is a noninvasive 2-step system designed to alleviate dentin hypersensitivity with minimal application volume. The formulation comprises an aqueous silver fluoride solution that is free from an ammonia base, enhancing patient comfort while maintaining predictable therapeutic efficacy. Riva Star Aqua demonstrates clinical equivalence to traditional 38% SDF formulations, providing effective caries management and dentin desensitization. Its mechanism involves silver fluoride and potassium iodide, which occlude dentinal tubules through formation of a low-solubility precipitate, enabling immediate sensitivity relief with effects reported to last up to 2 years. The inclusion of potassium iodide also reduces…

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION PRODUCT PROFILE Sc T he belief in the healing power of light goes all the way back to ancient Egypt and the worship of Rah, the sun god. In the early 1900s, the Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Dr. Neils Finsen for successfully treating Lupus Vulgaris with carbon arc lamp emitting concentrated ultraviolet (UV) light. Hospitals and tuberculosis sanatoriums used sunrooms for patients to aid patient recovery. During the 1930s and 1940s, infrared lamps were used to improve circulation and promote wound healing, while UV lamps were used to disinfect hospital air and…

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION PRODUCT PROFILE F rom temporomandibular (TMD) management to smile makeovers, muscle-directed technology is expanding the boundaries of comprehensive dentistry. One patient enters the dental practice with morning jaw soreness, chewing fatigue, and difficulty opening comfort - ably. Another wants a more confident smile but feels that changing the teeth alone may not address everything she sees in the mirror. Her teeth can be whitened, aligned, or restored, yet changes in the cheeks, chin, jawline, or submental region may continue to influence the way her smile is presented. Their concerns appear different, but both reveal an important and…

JULY/AUGUST 2026 • . One study evaluated 25 patients between 23 and 77 years of age who received four 20-minute EMFACE Functional treatments. Assessment included the TMD Disability Index, mandibular range of motion, and lateral range-of-motion measurements. Following treatment, 100% of patients reported improved jaw relaxation. Investigators also reported that 95% experienced improved jaw mobility, 91% experienced reduced pain during eating and chewing, and 91% were satisfied with the treatment outcomes. Patients reported an 89% improvement in their ability to perform daily activities, including brushing and flossing. One documented patient demonstrated a 10-mm improvement in maximum opening, with resolution of…

Q & A SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION practice management means thinking beyond the chair. Initially, Charles Vittitow, DMD, tried to rebel against dentistry. While he respected his dentist father’s work, Dr. Vittitow—or Dr. Chaz, as patients call him—didn’t want to do the expected thing and follow in his footsteps. However, after experimenting with engineering in college, Dr. Chaz realized his true passion: biology. He applied for dental school just in time for his father’s retirement. Again, he faced a choice: follow a traditional path or create his own. Joining the US Navy as a dentist, he served overseas before settling in…

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION COMPANY PROFILE T he 19th MegaGen International Symposium took place last month and plenty of momentum was generated by the New Toronto Declaration. The spirit of cross-generational collaboration is expected to grow even further in the years ahead. Five key takeaways follow, helping review the past 50 years of implant dentistry and taking a look at the future. 1. Carrying Forward the Legacy of 1982: The Historic Significance of the Toronto Symposium and a New Academic Alliance In the history of modern dental implantology, the 1982 Toronto Conference stands as the milestone that established the concept of…

SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION COMPANY PROFILE changed what is possible in the dental practice. Intraoral scanning, chairside workflows, 3D imaging, cloudbased collaboration, and integrated treatment planning have all helped redefine how teams diagnose, communicate, and deliver care. Yet, for many practices, the biggest opportunity is no longer simply acquiring the next piece of technology. It is maximizing the value of the technology they already have. That distinction matters. A scanner used only for select cases, a digital workflow that depends on one “super user,” or disconnected processes between the clinical and administrative team can prevent practices from fully utilizing their technology…

New Stories From the Shofu and LECOM Series The ongoing article series spotlighting dental students from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s School of Dental Medicine—proudly supported by Shofu—continues on with new reflections from Branden Franzen and Carter Bedinghaus as they near the culmination of their dental school journeys. In his latest article, “The Price of an Acceptance Letter: The Hidden Barriers to Getting Into Dental School,” Franzen offers a candid look at the often-overlooked financial challenges of pursuing a dental education. Reflecting on his experience as a first-generation college student from rural Illinois, he shares the realities of application…

In racing, speed alone is not enough. Anyone can press the accelerator. But winning requires precision, control, timing, data, and the ability to make the right decision at the right moment. The same is now true in dentistry. For years, intraoral scanners were viewed as optional digital upgrades—useful and impressive, but not essential. That mindset is changing. In the modern dental office, scanning is no longer just a replacement for impression material. It is becoming a foundational technology that connects diagnosis, treatment planning, patient communication, laboratory collaboration, restorative accuracy, and overall practice performance. Make no mistake: the race toward the…

The evaluation included full-face and smile photography (Nikon), retracted intraoral images, radiographs, and CBCT imagery (OP 3D EX [DEXIS]) (Figures 6 and 7), periodontal assessment, occlusal evaluation, existing restoration analysis, and an intraoral digital scan (Figures 8 and 9). AI-assisted radiographic analysis (Pearl AI) supported the diagnostic process by helping identify areas of concern and adding another layer of detection alongside the clinical examination (Figure 10). The scan captured the patient’s current dentition, arch form, occlusal relationship, restorative space, and existing wear patterns. Next, a 3D facial scan was generated using the Qlone app and…

COSMETIC JULY/AUGUST 2026 • flows do the same—they remove friction. Restorative Treatment Plan After reviewing the diagnostic waxup, smile design, photographs, scan, and clinical findings, I developed a veneer-based restorative plan guided by each tooth’s condition, structural needs, functional demands, and desired aesthetic outcome. Each tooth was evaluated individually based on existing dentistry, structural compromise, wear, position, and final color goals. The digital workflow helped guide preparation design, restorative thickness, material selection, occlusion, and laboratory communication, allowing the case to be planned with greater intention before preparation began. On the racetrack, every decision influences the next. Braking too late affects…

COSMETIC 30 using the Beadline technique, similar to the original mockup used for depth cuts. In this case, however, we chose lab-printed temporary veneers luted with ClearTemp LC Temporary Veneer Cement (Ultradent) to replicate the exact shape designed by the laboratory. The provisionals allowed the patient and dentist to evaluate the proposed smile—its aesthetics, phonetics, tooth length, lip support, occlusion, and overall satisfaction—before final fabrication. In aesthetic dentistry, provisionals are not merely temporary restorations. They are the test drive. Final Delivery The veneer restorations (IPS e.max [Ivoclar]) were pre-silanated, tried in, and evaluated for marginal fit, proximal contacts, occlusion, color,…

D igital dentistry has taken off, especially in implant dentistry procedures. Accuracy in implant placement and prosthetic design need to ensure a positive clinical prognosis and a content patient. Success is the result of both factors—precision and satisfaction. Diagnosing and treatment planning is an art that used to take years of practical experience to master, but digital dentistry has aided and guided the practitioner to plan and visualize the result prior to any surgical intervention. CBCT analysis, intraoral scanning, and the newest CAD/CAM technology are useful tools in not only preparing the patient but meeting their expectations with exceptional final…

Clinical dentistry is not without unexpected complications, and understanding the various digital tools at our disposal can help us pivot and improve restorative outcomes. Digital dentistry has revolutionized how clinicians plan implant-supported restorations and streamlined many clinical and laboratory workflows by improving efficiency, accuracy, and communication. Advances in CBCT imaging, intraoral scanning, and CAD/CAM technologies have enhanced diagnostic visualization and facilitated prosthodontically driven treatment planning. However, regardless of whether a workflow is analog or digital, one fundamental biomechanical requirement remains unchanged: achieving passive fit for multi-unit implant restorations. When multiple implants are connected by a single, rigid prosthesis, even minor…

JULY/AUGUST 2026 • reviewed. Patient returned for a series of post-op checks to evaluate healing and to reline the immediate denture. Step 3: Second-Stage Surgeries She returned after osseointegration had occurred for new maxillary and mandibular TRIOS intraoral scans, a 360° TRIOS scan of her freshly relined mandibular immediate denture, and new bite scan in centric relation. A full thickness flap was reflected and all implant sites were uncovered, implant primary stabilities were checked again, healing abutments were placed on Nos. 23 and 26, and 3 straight Neodent MUAs were placed and torqued at 32 Ncm on Nos. 7, 9,…

IMPLANTS abutment access channels would emerge in prosthetically acceptable positions, avoiding facial surfaces or weakened embrasures that could compromise the strength of the FP1-style implant bridge (Figures 5 to 7). Because changing the MUAs alters the 3D orientation of the prosthetic interface, new PG records were required despite the implants remaining in the same positions. Updated iMetric soft-tissue PG scans were therefore obtained (Figures 8 to 9) to accurately record the revised abutment geometry, and healing caps were replaced (Figure 10). Step 5: Provisionalization and Try-Ins On exocad, the predesign of the implant bridge was then connected to these new…

JULY/AUGUST 2026 • INTRODUCTION Restoring multiple anterior composites remains one of the more technique-sensitive and time-intensive procedures in daily practice. Moisture control, bleeding, polymerization shrinkage, void formation, and operator fatigue all contribute to potential restorative failure and increase stress for both the clinician and the patient. Advances in composite materials—particularly dualcure, bulk-fill systems—offer a simplified and more predictable approach. These materials exhibit minimal shrinkage during self-curing, allowing clinicians to move away from incremental layering techniques. When combined with a well-adapted stent, multiple restorations can be placed efficiently in a single step. Case Presentation A patient presented with multiple facial cavitations…

RESTORATIVE 36 and slightly overfilled (Figure 10). The laboratory-fabricated stent was fully seated and maintained for approximately 90 seconds to allow self-curing (Figure 11). Any remaining voids were corrected using a flowable resin (Start- Flow [Zest Dental Solutions]) without additional surface treatment, utilizing the oxygen-inhibited layer for bonding (Figure 12). The restorations were then ready for contouring (Figure 13). Mandibular anterior teeth were restored using the same protocol (Figures 14 and 15). Completed restorations were evaluated prior to finishing (Figure 16). Finishing and Polishing Excess material was removed using ceramic burs (Flashbuster [Zest Dental Solutions]) (Figure 17), followed by refinement…
