Saluting Our Readers At every opportunity, while on business for the magazine or presenting lectures throughout North America, I have been asking questions to get a real feel for how the magazine is faring among you as my peers. I can honestly and proudly report that the magazine is highly appreciated and respected for its many interesting case report clinical articles. All the comments I have heard, from the hundreds of conversations, have confirmed directly that Dentistry Today has a strong reputation for being a credible source of clinically relevant information. In addition to this anecdotal information gathered randomly in…

Oral Healthcare for Elders: A Missing Link Elderly residents in nursing homes are known to have poor oral hygiene and extensive oral disease, suffering from the poorest oral health of any population (Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 2006). This information initially came from Oral Health in America: A Report from the Surgeon General, published in 2000 by the US Department of Health and Human Services. Poor oral health can lead to aspiration pneumonia, heart attack, stroke, and uncontrollable diabetes; and all these conditions can cause death. Therefore, the elderly run the risk of dying from dirty teeth. Even though…

VIEWPOINT continued from page 10 certainly helped improve the statistic mentioned above. But what I discovered was, even though I was seeing many residents every 3 months, they still had dental conditions that were worsening. Why would this be happening, when I had been providing services? The answer is simple, and all dental professionals know the answer—simply cleaning teeth every 3 months and having an annual dental exam, is not enough to ensure good oral health, especially in this often medically over-promised population. In addition, what would make us think dependent elders would be able to perform the needed self-care…

FOCUS ON: Facial Aesthetics Warren P. W. Roberts, DMD, examines how introducing Botox for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments affects patients and the practice. Q: What is the number one cosmetic treatment requested in North America? A: Dentists possibly think it is tooth whitening, but Botox treatment for frown lines is the number one cosmetic request laser, skin treatments, and dermal fillers follow next. For the majority of age groups, Botox reigns the biggest "Wow!" effect. Other complimentary facial rejuvenation procedures, such as laser skin tightening and dermal fillers to replace lost volume, build on the muscle-relaxing action of Botox. Q:…

Radical Reconstruction of a Class II Division II Patient With Splinted Veneers Joseph Pelerin, DDS In the following case there was a tight time frame—a 24-year-old male in the Merchant Marines on leave. As a teenager, he received orthodontic treatment, and the proper anterior angulation was established. However, the lower jaw was not in place, and there was a mistake. Teeth Nos. 7 and 10 were tipped lingually, and he was grinding and shortened them about 7 mm. If more time were available, orthodontic banding and bringing the teeth to the correct anterior placement would have been the ideal treatment…

Once the silicone shim was removed, I trimmed very little flashing, adjusted the occlusion, and we used the temporaries to guide us on what we wanted for the final restoration. Already the temporaries were a huge difference from the patient's previous conditions. I thought we could use another 1.5 mm incisally, starting with the centrals, and then kept the laterals slightly off the plane and the canside having the same length as the centrals. But also I wanted a little more protrusive advancement incisally, so I instructed the lab to do that. I also instructed the lab that I wanted…

TECHNOLOGY TODAY I'm Beginning to See the Light Paul Fuerstein, DMD For dental use, the great thing about LEDs is that each one can be programmed to emit a specific frequency from the light spectrum. The bulb in my trusty old Pelton Crane Light Fantastic went out. Checking around the office, I found a little white box that contained a wrapped bulb and what looked like a cheap pair of piles. Instructions said to pry the socket prongs apart and carefully remove the expired bulb, being sure the switch was in the off position. (No matter how many times I…

Naturally Occurring Amino Acid Could Improve Oral Health Arginine—a common amino acid found naturally in foods—breaks down dental plaque, which could help millions of people avoid cavities and gum disease, researchers at the University of Michigan and Newcastle University have discovered. Alexander Rickard, assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and colleagues discovered that, in the lab, L-arginine—found in red meat, poultry, fish and dairy products, and is already used in dental products for tooth sensitivity—stopped the formation of dental plaque. "This is important as bacteria like to aggregate on tooth surfaces to form…
