Optimism Rings in the New Year The end of the year brought us another opportunity to reflect on the many learning experiences, challenges, and successes of 2016. Even more importantly, we can now look forward to another year of creating and achieving our highest personal and professional goals. Most of us, if lucky enough to have had a holiday breather with friends and family, come out on the other side renewed in spirit. I must confess that I am carrying a big dose of optimism into 2017 and, having joined together with the Dentistry Today editorial, production, and sales teams…

Corporate Healthcare: Important Contracts There exist 3 common contracts doctors sign with corporate dentistry. These include employment contracts, purchase agreements, and business service agreements (BSAs). Each of these contracts may be peppered with legal landmines. It is imperative that doctors accept that their expertise is patient care, and swimming with the sharks of corporate healthcare. Nothing in corporate business negotiation can be taken at face value. This is not a friendship based on mutual trust and respect, as in the doctor patient relationship, or when working with a specialist colleague. Corporate interest is almost exclusively directed at the financial welfare…

VIEWPOINT continued from page 10 Further complicating doctor compensation is the phrase "nonqualified arrangements." Exactly how and why will the dentist's income be adjusted down? Will the adjustments for flawed "Gold Plan" masquerading as insurance, in which the DSO receives a monthly payment for discounted services, for which the employee doctor can loses for discarcare? Noncompete clauses all too often represent a mechanism to retain employees, no matter their dissatisfaction with the company and the desire to leave. In states such as California, these clauses are fully unenforceable. In other states, these agreements are fully enforceable. A designated time frame…

FOCUS ON: Continuing Education Thomas E. Dudney, DMD, presents the benefits of clinical training that is experienced via live-patient, hands-on dental continuing education. Q: Define live-patient hands-on program. A: It is a type of program where dentists, accompanied by their appropriate team members, bring one of their own patients to the course to do preplanned and pre-agreed upon clinical procedures under the supervision of an experienced clinical instructor. Hands-on programs allow the doctor and team to receive valuable knowledge and information with lectures and personalized instruction in a clinical setting. Whereas this format can be used for teaching different types…

Born to Run Paul Fuerstein, DMD My quest at dental meetings is to run up and down exhibitor aisles researching products (so you don't have to). My Fitbit averages more than 50,000 steps during these meetings! At the end of last year, there was a flurry of meetings such as the ADA Annual Session and the Greater New York Dental Meeting, and a number of new products appeared on their exhibit floors. Throughout the year, I report on these products. Some I've had a hands on chance to use; others I just found interesting. Here are a few that are…

Restorative Digital Dentistry, Part 2 Gary Kaye, DDS Choosing the Right Digital Dentistry Strategy This is the second in a 3-part article series. Part 1 was published in the October 2016 issue of Dentistry Today, and can be found archived online at . INTRODUCTION The new paradigms for digital dentistry are transforming our profession and dental practices in fundamental ways. These changes are having a profound impact on many aspects of the way dentistry is practiced. They are having dramatic implications with regard to how we talk to our patients about dental care and the new patient service experience. There…

Restorative Digital Dentistry, Part 2... continued from page 20 The author believes that a majority of dentists adopting this technology during the next few years will opt to do away with physical impressions and will purchase (or lease) a standalone intraoral scanner. The scans will then be sent electronically to a digital laboratory. We can refer to this strategy as scan only, as opposed to chairside (where the entire process is done in the office). If a dentist selects the scan only strategy, then the next decision is which scanner/manufacturer to use. At NYCDD, a technology scorecard has been developed…

TECHNOLOGY the dentist's productivity is pivotal so more results can be produced in shorter periods of time. Issues such as scanning and design work can be delegated to team members. The dentist will see the best results when delegating most of the tasks that others can complete, leaving more time to focus on the high value work that only the clinician can undertake. DIGITAL DENTISTRY RELATIONSHIPS The Doctor-Technician Relationship In order to provide successful prosthetic outcomes for our patients, the relationship we have with our laboratories and lab technicians is of paramount importance. As we move into the digital restorative…

NeoBurr: Eliminating the Weak Link Perry L. Parke, president, Miccopy Many years ago, I remember reading a report from the CRA, (now CR) that polled the main frustrations dentists had with carbides. The two that tied for first were a lack of aggressive cutting and breakage. We just introduced the NeoBurr carbides at Miccopy, but I remember thinking that if we could just address this breakage issue, we could easily give dentists something that they really needed. So, we did. It wasn't easy, and it took 12 long years. The first thing we did was convert all shapes to single-piece…
