Oral Cancer Marches On Once again, we recognize April as Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Month. In previous years, I have taken the opportunity to outline some of the grim oral cancer statistics that seem to match ad nauseum from the past right into the present, remaining virtually unchanged. This year, my brief comments will be a bit different. First off, I would like all of our readers to take a moment of silence to remember those who continue to live with cancer, or have died from this dreaded disease. When we hear that there are still many physicians…

VIEWPOINT continued from page 10 to raise awareness with regard to oral cancer. Soon after I was diagnosed, and a few months into treatment, I founded the Oral Cancer Awareness Foundation (OrCA) in the hopes that my illness would "have a purpose," especially considering the perfect storm. I was a stage IV oral cancer patient/dentist/speaker, and perhaps only one of only a few in the country with that distinction. Many kind individuals devoted time and money along the way to help with the process. OrCA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose purpose is to raise public and professional awareness of…

FOCUS ON: Treatment Planning for Success Ara Nazarian, DDS, discusses necessary steps and technologies in treating fully edentulous patients with implants. Q: An increasing number of patients are presenting to national dental offices requiring multiple extractions leading to full edentulation. With the progressing development of dental treatment and materials, why is this number still rising? A: As people live longer, the wear on their dentition increases and function decreases. Also, teeth can become more brittle due to prior endodontic or prosthetic treatment from years past. Certain medications taken can cause the degradation of the dentition due to increased caries rate…

Cancer Cells and Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Killed by Nisin Nisin, a naturally occurring food preservative that grows on dairy products, has been shown to kill cancer cells and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. A new University of Michigan study found that feeding rats a "nisin milkshake" killed 70% to 80% of head and neck tumor cells after 6 weeks and extended survival, said Dr. Yvonne Kapila, a professor at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. After 8 weeks of nisin treatment, tumors were comparable to tumors at 1 week. Kapila's group has published positive results with less potent nisin, but the highly purified…

Future Tooth Fillings May Incorporate Bioactive Glass Engineers at Oregon State University (OSU) have made some promising findings about the ability of "bioactive" glass to help reduce the ability of bacteria to attack composite tooth fillings, and perhaps even provide some of the minerals needed to replace those lost to tooth decay. The new research was published in the journal Dental Materials, in work supported by the National Institutes of Health. "Bioactive glass, which is a type of crushed glass that is able to interact with the body, has been used in some types of bone healing for decades," said…

In First Impressions, George Freedman, DDS, gives readers a brief summary of products that have recently been introduced to dentistry, based on his clinical experience. CERARESIN BOND Porcelain & Resin Repair System Shofu Dental Porcelain repair has been an extremely unproductive procedure in the dental practice. No matter how carefully the fractured ceramic (or composite, for that matter) surface is cleaned, dried, primed, and bonded, the repair invariably fails within a short time. Dentists are reluctant to perform porcelain (and even composite resin) repairs because they then assume forward responsibility for the condition of the tooth, patients return with alarming…

As a result, numerous improved material and working characteristics have been made possible. During manufacturing, the cone material is injection molded to precision tolerances, eliminating any concern about point size variations. The nano chemistry composed provides a material that is denser, less sticky, and has significantly fewer voids. Coupled with a lowered volumetric change during obturation, a lower working temperature can be utilized. The softness, hardness, and flow characteristics can also be carefully controlled, making NanoFlow suitable for use…

The Importance of Increasing the Success Rate A Look at Procedures, Factors, and Clinical Practices INTRODUCTION When I first started in practice dentistry, I asked myself what is important when treating patients. My answer was: "a high clinical success rate." Not only is it important to make patients feel that what you do for your patients will actually work, but the clinical success rate can also be a benchmark to measure what techniques and products will directly benefit your patients. If the clinical success rate reported is the same for similar procedures or techniques, then one can fall back on…

ENDODONTICS I now mark my No. 4 round bur with a permanent marker at the 7.0 mm point on the bur. 12 years, many corroborating papers have been published on pulp chamber morphologic measurements.3&-13 All these papers verify that the distance to the middle of the pulp chamber from a cusp tip is approximately 7.0 mm. It is another 7.0 mm from the floor of the chamber to the closest furcal perforation point. As a result, I now mark my No. 4 round bur with a permanent marker at the 7.0 mm point on the bur. Creating Well-Obturated Canals The Use of Warm Vertical Condensation Techniques [PHOTO: Headshot of smiling man in dental coat] Trent T. Lally, DDS, MSD Eric Pacheco, DDS Garry L. Bej, DDS INTRODUCTION One of the most common questions asked by general practitioners and specialists alike is: "How do I obturate the root canal system?" With many techniques and materials available to the practitioner, it can be difficult to know which system is the right one for both you and your patient's tooth. Not all root canal to obturation with the correct anatomical system, as not every canal can be shaped with…
